CHARACTER INFO
• Character Name: Takashi Shirogane
• Character Age: 25
• Character Canon: Voltron: Legendary Defender
• Canon Point: S1: E1. Shiro will be pulled from his time as a prisoner to the Galran Empire (basically an alien species that took over a majority of the universe); he’s also CRAU from The City
• Character History: Wiki
Sidenote: His canonpoint may come across as pre-canon but there are many flashbacks shown throughout canon to demonstrate Shiro’s experience during captivity. There is also an entire episode devoted to Shiro’s life prior to the Kerberos mission/alien abduction.
Here is a quick rundown of key character defining moments covered in canon leading up to his canonpoint:
• Character Personality:
— Positive Trait: Supportive: As seen in the many glimpses of Shiro's life prior to becoming a paladin of Voltron in flashbacks, Shiro has always outwardly presented himself as someone who is not just capable, but also thoughtful and kind to those around him. Through his considerate nature, he connects easily with others almost immediately. He’s a genuinely kind soul; one who is filled to the brink with patience and empathy. No matter what he himself is going through, he’s never too tired or too busy to lend an ear, a shoulder, a hand. He’s sensitive to the struggles of others. Whether this leads him to become a mentor to a troubled cadet like Keith or becoming the glue and inspiration that team Voltron rallies around in their fight against the Galra, Shiro is a steady, stable presence who commands authority just as easily as he instills a sense of easy comradery.
— Positive Trait: Reliable: He’s very much a leader, both disciplined and practical. Having a tactical mind and a pragmatic military background, Shiro is well equipped to make the tough calls without missing a beat. Part of his success is that he’s able to distance himself from the existentialist fear of mortality. Having been diagnosed with a degenerative disease in childhood, he’s come to terms with the shortened span of his own life. This isn’t to say he believes himself to be expendable, but he does seem to put a higher value on protecting others over himself. For example, at the entrance of the arena where prisoners are being sent out to, more or less, be slaughtered for the entertainment of the cheering crowd, Shiro makes the snap decision to “attack” Matt Holt (one of his crewmates abducted with him) in order to take him out of the line-up, so that Matt wouldn’t be sent out. In doing this, he brings all the focus onto himself, redirecting the droids’ interests to dealing with him instead.
— Positive Trait: Resilient: Shiro is, in a word, disciplined. Patience yields focus afterall. Furthermore, he is extremely practical. He has a tactical mind and a pragmatic military background, making it easier for him to make the tough ( sometimes unpopular ) calls. Amazingly, Shiro does not perish in the gladiator pits that time. Or the next time. Or the one after that. So on and so forth, Shiro outwits and out-sustains his opponents, mostly due to his ability to keep a level-head despite however many chips are down. He’s very much the type to always defy the odds and turn an otherwise hopeless situation around on its head. He doesn’t quit; he fights until he physically can’t fight anymore.
— Negative Trait: Stubborn: Perhaps as a result of his own significant trials in life, he wants the people around him to be comfortable and happy. He does not do well about having this mirrored back at him, though, and this is where he differs. He’s far more stubborn than he lets on. Outside, he has the perfect façade of stability, but inside? He certainly isn’t as put together. As a result of his abduction and subsequent torture at the hands of the Galra, Shiro is constantly struggling to keep his flashbacks and triggers under control in order to project outer strength. Despite this, he has a very set mindset of being self-sufficient and as such, he internalizes a lot of his troubles and traumas. If asked, he usually shrugs off the concern with a dark, ill-timed joke or a flat out denial. That stubborn nature that prevents him from showing weakness is what has propelled him through life: from rising in the ranks at Galaxy Garrison to surviving the gladiator pits. He learned early not to show too much vulnerability and instead, has always set his mind to a goal, gritted his teeth, and made it a reality, despite the obstacles laid out before him.
— Negative Trait: Selfless: It sounds good, but he pushes it too far. As seen by his ease in taking Matt’s place in the arena, Shiro puts the safety of others above his own. Some of this lack of concern for himself stems from an early life diagnosis. With a degenerative disease diagnosis weighing heavy on him, he’s grown up knowing his body will give out on him far sooner than his age calls for. That’s why he’s so comfortable with the idea of his own death. Out of this, he's come away with a motivation to do something good and productive and meaningful with his short life, meaning that he devotes most of his energy into helping others.
— Negative Trait: Reticent. He's secretive and closed off when it comes to himself. It's a hard task to get him to open up about anything of importance when it concerns his well-being. At Galaxy Garrison, no one except those who had access to his files seemed to know anything about his muscular dystrophy. Not that it is anyone's business what his medical status is, but even Keith, his closest friend of a few years doesn't hear anything about it until the very end, right before Shiro leaves on his Kerberos mission. Any time Keith asked about it before, even directly referencing the medical bracelet Shiro wears, Shiro would simply brush it off and promptly change the subject. This reluctance to open up extends to simpler things like not voicing his own doubts and concerns in every day situations; he doesn't enjoy the idea of needing to lean on others, even though he regularly is that pillar of support for others. It's a sore subject that he fought with Adam about: he doesn't need anyone taking care of him. His time as a prisoner to the Galra has only increased this feeling of self-reliance, because in that instance, he truly has no one else to take care of him. And more damningly, any bit of shown weakness would be used against him.
• Character Skills:
Hand-to-Hand Combat: Well, for starters, he does have a hand up ( heh pun ) in close combat, because his right arm has been replaced with a piece of tech ( we’ll get into that ). Aside from the upgrade, he’s built like a brick house ( a year playing gladiator in an alien ring and ultimately becoming “the champion” has a way of building the stamina and strength better than any old gym would ). Physically strong, surprisingly fast on his feet, and equipped with a tactical brain, he’s lethal.
Upgraded Right Arm: He lost his right arm during his captivity with the Galra ( it’s not entirely clear how he lost his arm, but he does make an off-hand comment in a flashback about how “they already took his arm” while he’s strapped to an operating table ). Either way, he’s been fitted with a cybernetic prosthesis mid-bicep on his right arm. It packs a punch. The increased strength is only the beginning though. Activated, it emits a purple glow and if he focuses the energy, he can actually cut through walls, doors, droids, most anything. He can also focus that energy to burn hotter and melt substances, such as steel. Furthermore, it can work as a power source ( he powered a control panel of a Galra cruiser that crash landed on a planet, by activating his arm and placing it on the panel ).
Considering the nerfing of the game, I’m assuming it can’t punch through strong, reinforced walls, it can’t burn hot enough to melt steel and it can’t act as its own reliable power source. I’m thinking that it’ll simply be a mech prosthesis, marginally stronger than a flesh arm.
Piloting Skills: He’s the Garrison’s Golden Boy. One of the few people who can out-fly him is Keith. He trained in the fighter class and eventually became an astronaut.
• Character Inventory:
— ITEM ONE: A sword from the Galran gladiator arena
— ITEM TWO: His Galaxy Garrison medal
— ITEM THREE: His muscle stimulator bracelet for his muscular dystrophy
• Important Notes: His time at The City was only a few months, so there hasn’t been any character defining/altering moments. The main takeaway is that he’s been out of captivity ( alien captivity, at least ) for a few months and is better adjusted to being reimmersed in “society” again.
Also, ooc related, I'm about to go on a backpacking trip for the weekend. Meaning that my reception is going to be iffy. If there are any questions or concerns for this app, I'd simply ask that I be allowed until Sunday night/Monday to address them.
